Smashing Serena Williams
Serena Williams Serena Williams, the U.S tennis champion was born on 26th September, 1981, in Saginaw Michigan. Serena has four siblings and she is the youngest of them all. Her elder sisters’ names are Lyndrea, Isha, Yetunde and Venus. All of them grew in Compton, a rough L.A suburb as her parents, Richard and Oracene migrated to Los Angeles.
Serena was very motivated towards the game from a very young age and had started taking lessons at a very early age. She was coached and managed by her father, Richard Williams. Serena was quite motivated and ambitious therefore was the first to be introduced among these sisters. She started her training in the neighborhood courts and her presence for the sport was quickly known to all.
She entered her first tournament when she was only four and a half, and at this very young age she started winning nearly every match she entered. And this talent of hers enriched her with many product endorsement deals and national press coverage.
By watching Serena’s success, her sister Venus Williams was also motivated and started her career in the game of tennis. But their father did not want their competition due to the possibility of racial problems and of course competition between the two of them. The entire family of Serena shifted to Palm Beach Gardens as Serena Williams was enrolled in Rick Macci’s Tennis Academy in Florida. The World Tennis Association was reluctant to recognize a player that young as Serena was only 14.
Yet she was very successful at the junior level but when she first started playing for the big league, it did not work as planned and so she had a rocky start. In her first major tournament, she suffered a glaring defeat at Bell Challenge in Quebec in 1995. Later in 1997 she was able to beat World’s No. 7 Mary Pierce and No. 4 Monica Seles in quarterfinals at Ameritech-Sponsored tournament in Chicago. Although she was ranked as low as at 304th she was still motivated by the continuous encouragement from his father and continued her upward graph.
Serena was managed to increase his ranking to no.21 in 1999, when she after beating sixth seed Irina Spirlea lost to her sister at her first grand slam, Australian Open in 1998. At last her hard work paid dividend when she was able to win her first title when she clinched U.S. Open after beating high ranked players like Martina Hinges and Lindsay Davenport. And the following day she was able to get another title in ladies doubles when she was partnered by her sister Venus Williams. By then there was no doubt in any one’s mind that she is going to become one of the greatest tennis player in the history of game.
It was her success on the court that brought attention of producers and agents. In 2001, she was featured in the episode of The Simpson’s, she also made an appearance in the rapper video named “Do My” which also featured Jay-Z and she has also made a cameo in Martin Lawrence’s black knight.
